World literacy Day in Pakistan

World literacy day is celebrated on 8th of September every year.UNESCO declared it on 26 October 1966.First International Literacy day was celebrated in the year 1967.
عالمی یومِ خواندگی ہر سال 8 ستمبر کو منایا جاتا ہے۔ یونیسکو نے 26 اکتوبر 1966 کو 8 ستمبر کو بطور 'عالمی یومِ خواندگی' کے طور پر منانے کا اعلان کیا۔ اور پہلا عالمی یومِ خواندگی 8 ستمبر 1968 کو منایا گیا۔

The most dynamic objective of this day is to highlight the importance of literacy to the individuals,societies and to the communities.It also aims to enhance the literacy rate all over the world especially in the developing countries.

Theme of International Literacy Day 2018

UNESCO decides to celebrate 8 September 2018 literacy day with the theme "Literacy and Skills Development".No doubt that with these efforts the literacy rate is increasing but it still faces many challenges. The need is to improve literacy with skills.This year 2018 is dedicated to literacy and skills development.
ستمبر 8 ،2018 کے عالمی یومِ خواندگی کا موضوع ' خواندگی اور صلاحیتوں کی ترویج' ہے۔ اس بات میں کوئی شک و شبہ نہیں کہ اِن کاوشوں سے دُنیا بھر میں شرح تعلیم بُلند ہو رہی ہے لیکن اب بھی ہم کو بُہت سی مُشکلات کا سامنا ہے۔ضرورت اس بات کی ہے کہ تعلیم کے ساتھ ساتھ پیشہ ورانہ صلاحیتوں کو بھی اُجاگر کیا جائے۔

Current situation of the World Literacy Rate

One Billion adult illiterates are over the world
In all the developing countries,the percentage of children aged 6 to 11 not attending school is 15 percent.In the sub-Saharan Africa since 1980 ,primary school enrollment has declined from 58 percent to 50 percent.Africa as a continent has a literacy rate of less than 60 percent.In the least developed countries,overall literacy rate is 49 percent.Women make up two- thirds of all non-literates.

Literacy Day Activities for Students in Pakistan

1.Buy a book and gift it to your friends.
2.Select a topic and write a detailed essay collecting all possible information about that topic.
3.Take a book and read it collectively with other students and discuss the books with your panel friends.
4.Meet a person who is not literate and tell him the importance of literacy.
5.Plan to establish a small library at your home.


With somewhat not increasing literacy rate of 58 percent, Pakistan will celebrate International Literacy Day under the theme ‘Literacy and Skills Development’.
The country’s overall literacy rate as per the latest survey is 58 percent. Male literacy rate is 70 percent while female literacy rate is below 50 percent.

Baluchistan: 41%
As per UNESCO’s 2016 Global Education Monitoring Report there were 21.5 million children not going to schools.
Situations of Schools in Pakistan
Baluchistan: Of all Governments schools only 30 percent have toilet facilities
Sindh: 50 % schools are lacking drinking water facilities
KPK: 13 percent Public schools are without boundary walls
Punjab: Seven percent Public schools have no electricity connection
