The Punjab government has signaled major
changes to the academic calendar and education support system for the current
year, aiming to provide relief to both students and institutions. According to
officials, summer vacations are likely to be extended to nearly two months,
while winter holidays are expected to be observed in January under a reviewed
schedule.
The new academic year has already began in
government schools across the province, accompanied by several student-friendly
initiatives. One of the key highlights is the large-scale delivery of free
textbooks. Authorities plan to provide approximately 30 million books to
students during this academic year, ensuring uninterrupted access to vital
learning materials.
Under this initiative, students from grade
one to three will receive all textbooks completely free of cost. For grades
four and five, most textbooks will be provided without any charges. Meanwhile,
students in grades six to nine will receive a portion of their books free,
helping to ease the financial load on families. Notably, students in grade ten
will continue to receive a full set of textbooks at no cost.
To address any remaining gaps, the government
is also introducing a book bank system. This system will ensure that students
who do not receive complete sets of books can still access the required course
materials, promoting equal learning opportunities for all.
In addition to supporting students, the
provincial government is considering measures to reduce operational costs for
schools. One such proposal includes lowering commercial electricity tariffs for
government institutions. This step aims to provide financial relief to schools
and improve resource management.
Overall, these reforms reflect the
government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector, reducing
financial pressures, and ensuring better learning facilities for students
across Punjab.
